How Does Alcohol Affect Heart Development During Pregnancy?

The development of a baby’s heart begins very early in pregnancy, often before many people realise they are expecting.

During this stage, the heart is forming its chambers, valves, and major blood vessels. This process relies on precise cellular movement and signalling.

Alcohol exposure can interfere with these processes.

It may disrupt how key cells migrate and organise, which can affect the structure of the heart. This increases the likelihood of congenital heart defects.

Common issues linked to disruption in development include:

• Openings in the heart walls, such as septal defects.
• Changes in the formation of major blood vessels.
• Abnormal valve development.

Timing plays a significant role.

The first trimester, particularly the early weeks, is when the heart is most vulnerable to external influences.

Because of this, current UK guidance recommends avoiding alcohol entirely during pregnancy.

This approach helps reduce preventable risks and supports healthy fetal development.
