Why Are Some Heart Defects Present at Birth but Found Later?

Congenital heart defects develop before birth.

However, not all are diagnosed early.

Some remain undetected because:

• They cause only mild changes in blood flow.
• The heart adapts over time.
• Symptoms appear gradually.

Conditions such as atrial septal defects or bicuspid aortic valves are often identified in adulthood.

This reflects delayed detection, not late development.

Understanding this distinction is important when interpreting a diagnosis.
