What is coarctation of the aorta and how is it treated?

Coarctation of the aorta is a condition where part of the aorta becomes narrowed, making it harder for blood to flow to the lower body.

This increases pressure in the heart and upper body while reducing circulation to the legs and organs. Over time, this can lead to complications such as heart strain and high blood pressure.

In babies, severe cases can present shortly after birth and require urgent treatment. In adults, it is often discovered during checks for hypertension.

Treatment includes surgery in infants and stenting in older patients. Both methods aim to widen the narrowed section and restore normal blood flow.

Long term care remains essential even after treatment.
