What is a single ventricle heart defect and how is it managed?

A single ventricle heart defect is a complex congenital condition where only one of the heart’s pumping chambers functions properly.

This results in mixed oxygen levels in the blood and increased strain on the heart. Without treatment, these conditions are life threatening.

Management involves a staged surgical approach. The Norwood, Glenn, and Fontan procedures are performed over the first few years of life to reroute blood flow and improve oxygen delivery.

Although this does not cure the condition, it allows the heart to function more efficiently.

Long term care is essential, as patients require monitoring for heart function, rhythm issues, and other complications.
